Pulmonary Medicine is the branch of Internal Medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions that affect the lungs and breathing.
This includes diagnosis and treatment of conditions like asthma, emphysema, lung cancer, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary fibrosis, chronic cough, and other related conditions. Pulmonary Medicine also deals with the treatment of critical illness from any cause and frequently includes Critical Care Medicine, or care of the severely ill patient in the hospital intensive care unit.
This practice is unique in this area in that it participates in clinical trials so patients can have access to cutting edge therapies that in many cases are not yet generally available without traveling to out of town medical centers. Dr. Elton has special interest and expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary hypertension and in addition to conducting clinical trials in this area, he frequently helps educate other health care providers in the southeast in how to diagnose and care for this condition.
